It may be time to consider private school for your gifted child
Rockdale County's gifted service will operate differently next year.
NEWBORN, GA, February 23, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- According to an article in the Rockdale Citizen, some parents are upset by changes to Rockdale County's gifted program. In past years, Rockdale County has transported students in the gifted program to Peek's Chapel to take advanced courses with their peers from other schools. Next year, Rockdale County Public Schools is planning to offer Program Challenge at all eleven of their elementary schools, according to Rich Autry, chief academic officer in the Office of Teaching and Learning.
Program Challenge offers gifted children an opportunity to learn in a positive environment. Parents feel that regular classroom environments in the public school system contain large student numbers and discipline problems from students who don't want to be at school. If the gifted program is added to all of the schools with only one to two gifted-certified teachers at each school, parents worry that the program won't be as unique and challenging and that the range of classes offered to gifted students will dwindle.
In a statement to the Rockdale Citizen, a parent states, "We can't keep dumbing down the system, and that is what we are going to do. We're not going to have anything special."
Another parent is concerned that the program won't allow their children to be around other children who are like-minded. "It's nice for them to know they are not alone -- being smart is sometimes not the coolest thing."
Private schools like Eastminster School in Conyers, GA may be the answer to these concerns. With low student-to-teacher ratios, gifted children are provided with an individualized teaching approach. Smaller classes that have like-minded students promote an enriched, encouraging, and safe learning environment.
Eastminster School provides the highest quality academic education to motivated and disciplined students of any race or religious affiliation from the East Metro Atlanta area, emphasizing every student's social, physical, and spiritual well-being.
